Help us create a native plant and pollinator garden

Help us create a native plant and pollinator garden to enhance the Chappell Elementary School grounds!

With these supplies, we will transform part of the lawn into a garden that will attract wildlife and add beauty & ecological diversity to our school. Once the garden is established, it will help students and community members learn about the benefits of native plants, learn about and see native insects and animals that visit the grounds, and overall improve the beauty of our school.

A huge thank you to Emily W. in 5th grade for fundraising the money we needed to purchase seeds! While the rest of this project will be generally low cost, these supplies will help us start our project with everything we need, including borders, fencing, mulch, and signage.

Project timeline:

  1. fall 2024: cardboard lawn to kill grass and prepare the ground over the winter.
  2. winter 2024: winter seed starting
  3. spring 2025: plant what we have grown, water & establish
  4. summer 2025 and onward: maintain & help the garden establish.

Many prairie plants grown from seed take 2-3 years to fully mature, and we will work to maintain and establish these plants until they no longer need to be watered and looked after. Help us create a prairie oasis for all students and community members to enjoy!
